The Earl Fuller / Frank Marotta Sportsmanship Award is named after 2 men who place a high value on good sportsmanship.  Earl Fuller, former wrestling coach at RIT for 47 years, was one of the founders of the Wrestling Officials Association of Section 5 in 1956.  He conducted wrestling clinics throughout the area that were instrumental in the early development of Section 5 wrestling.

Frank Marotta has been inducted into the Section 5 Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Upstate NY Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport of wrestling in Greater Western NY. He also coached at the former Madison High and continues to serve as the Executive Secretary of the Wrestling Officials Association of Section 5 and also works with the NY State wrestling committee where he is a past President.

The Wrestling Officials Association of Section 5 presents the Earl Fuller / Frank Marotta Sportsmanship Awards to 2 wrestling programs each season at the State qualifier tournament.  One school from each division (Division 1 and Division 2) will receive the award. The recipients are selected by the Wrestling officials who interact with the schools throughout the season and have the best vantage point to determine which schools display good sportsmanship. Officials evaluate all levels of wrestling, Varsity, JV, Modified and their fans during the season. Because both Earl Fuller and Frank Marotta placed a high priority on wrestlers’ conduct and coaches’ ethics, this award is a representation of the level of sportsmanship displayed by the school’s whole wrestling program from the youth to the Varsity including parents, fans and supporters.
